Symptoms we treat

Common dental emergencies

Why suffer in silence when we can help ease the pain? If you have any of the following, it's worth being seen.

Toothache

Persistent toothache is usually a sign of a bigger problem with a tooth or the gum around it. The sooner it's looked at, the easier it tends to be to put right.

Dental abscess

An abscess causes swelling and can be very painful. It's caused by infection and tends to worsen if left, so prompt care matters. Some cases need a short course of antibiotics first.

Broken or cracked tooth

Sensitivity to hot or cold, or pain when biting, can be signs of a cracked or broken tooth. We'll make it comfortable and talk through how best to repair it.

Lost filling or crown

A filling or crown that has come out can leave a tooth sensitive and sharp. We can usually re-secure or replace it and settle things down quickly.

Knocked-out tooth

A knocked-out adult tooth is a true emergency. Keep it in milk and contact us straight away, as acting fast gives the best chance of saving it.

Jaw pain (TMJ)

Pain around the jaw, cheek, ear or neck, restricted movement, or clicking can point to a jaw-joint problem. We can assess it and suggest ways to ease it.

Sensitive teeth

Tooth sensitivity isn't something you have to put up with. In most cases the cause can be found and treated simply.

Bleeding gums

Bleeding gums can be down to over-brushing, but they're often an early sign of gum disease. A gentle check tells us which, and what to do next.

Not sure what's wrong?

If something just doesn't feel right in your teeth, mouth or jaw, get in touch. We'd far rather take a quick look than have you worry.

When a tooth can't be saved

Gentle extractions, with care at every step.

Sometimes a tooth is damaged beyond repair or simply too painful to keep, and the kindest thing is to remove it. When that's the case, Sophia carries this out gently and explains the aftercare to you in full, so you know exactly what to expect.

Even very nervous patients benefit from a calm, empathetic approach, with everything done at your pace. If a case is more complex than a routine extraction, you'll be referred to a colleague with the right experience, so you're always in safe hands.

Anxious about being seen?

Emergencies are easier when you feel looked after.

Pain is stressful enough without dreading the dentist too. If you're anxious or have a phobia, you're very welcome here. Sophia and the team have plenty of experience supporting nervous patients, and you'll never be rushed or judged. Just let us know how you're feeling when you get in touch.

Emergency questions

Good to know

Can I be seen the same day?

Often, yes. Same-day emergency slots are usually available if you get in touch early in the day. Message on WhatsApp or send the contact form and we'll do our best to see you quickly.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe or persistent toothache, swelling around a tooth, a knocked-out, broken or cracked tooth, a lost filling or crown, or bleeding that won't settle are all good reasons to be seen promptly. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll advise.

I'm very nervous. Can you still help?

Absolutely. Sophia is known for a gentle, empathetic approach with anxious patients. Tell us you're nervous when you get in touch and we'll take extra care, explain everything, and go at your pace. See our nervous patients page.

What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?

Hold the tooth by the crown rather than the root. If it's an adult tooth, try to gently place it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If you can't, keep it in milk and contact us straight away, as time really matters.

How much does an emergency appointment cost?

This is a private practice, so there's a fee for an emergency assessment and any treatment needed. Sophia will always explain the cost clearly before going ahead, so there are no surprises.
